Daytime Lecture Series:
What is Abstract Expressionism?

Interpreted Event

Tuesdays
11:30 am

May 6, May 13, May 20

Gain greater understanding of Abstract Expressionism and critically evaluate the painting and sculpture that transformed the art world after World War II. Discover the artistic and cultural conditions that nourished its emergence as the first truly revolutionary art movement born in America. How have views of this critical movement changed over time?

This three-session survey is presented in conjunction with Action/Abstraction:Pollock, de Kooning and American Art, 1940–1976, the first major exhibition in 20 years to rethink Abstract Expressionism.

May 6 Session I covers the movement’s origins;
May 13 Session II explores the diversity of Abstract Expressionism;
May 20 Session III examines artist reactions against the movement.

Joan Pachner is an art historian and lecturer at the Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This series will be sign language interpreted.
